Hello and Happy Friday everyone!! So here we are on day 3 of my 30 day challenge. Today’s topic is slightly serious which is okay with me, I hardly ever write about anything serious. The exact topic was “my thoughts on drugs and alcohol.” Many of you know I am in school for substance abuse counseling, so I would say I feel pretty strongly about today’s topic.

Drugs and alcohol seem to be in the news a lot lately and not for good reasons. Drug’s mostly seem like they are infecting our high schools and causing a lot of deaths. In my work in treatment groups, I see a lot of people abusing prescription drugs and also alcohol.

It’s alarming that so many younger people can find drugs so easily, especially in schools. Rhode Island has a huge epidemic right now with heroin. It is disturbing that you are able to buy it very cheap where children are trying to learn and grow. That is probably the biggest reason why I want to go into this field, I want to help and or prevent people from going down a life-long road with substance abuse.

I don’t want to talk too much about my view on this but it is something that should be on the minds of all us. I think a lot about it when I’m leaving the bar and driving home-I’m not worried about myself but I am worried about others on the road around me. The world has turned into a very scary place.

What are some of your thoughts on drugs and alcohol? How is the challenge going for everyone? Have a wonderful Friday!!

happy-friday

Cheers!

xoxo Lindsay

As a child of someone who struggles with alcohol abuse, I understand how alarming it is. I didn’t meet my biological father until I was about 18. He was “sober”, or so he claimed, and hide his addiction from me and continuously lied to me about it. He’s no longer in my life, not because of his addiction, but because of his lies. It’s a serious problem. It’s scary that younger kids can get their hands on it so easily.

Yes it is very scary indeed. There is a 17 year old in my group therapy class and I’m happy he is there but it is also scary to think that he knows he has a problem at such a young age.

Thanks for sharing some thoughts on this tough topic. It hits close to home for my family, and I’ve seen the destruction drugs can cause. The prevalence of drug use worries me as I think about raising kids in this world.

I’m really glad you chose to write about this as it is a subject close to my heart as well. I’ve done a lot of experimenting with drugs in the past, heroin being the most dangerous in my opinion. It’s the drug that ended my stint in experimentation after seeing how badly the people around me, as well as myself were effected. Quiting that lifestyle was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, not just withdrawling from the drugs but cutting out all the “friends” I’d made along the way. Luckily I had some amazing help to pull me out of that pit, good for you for realizing there is a need for people like you to help other kids get their lives going in the right direction! If there hadn’t been people there for me during that time I don’t know what would have happened to me… Last night I actually dreamed about that past, and the first thing I saw when I woke up was my precious little girl and amazing boyfriend, so this post really stuck a cord with me today. Thank you so much for posting Lindsay, as always I love your blog! Keep on keepin’ on!

Wow I’m really glad you liked this post. I was a little unsure of if it was to “serious”. Thank you for opening up-it really means a lot.

I love that you are studying to help people with substance abuse. My mom was an alcoholic for years and she went and got help and got better and then about 3 years later (almost a year ago) she was hospitalized and was in ICU because of her past substance abuse and she passed away. Ever since that day I have been more aware and more active in my younger sisters actions because she is at the age where she may be peer pressured into drinking or drugs.

I’m sorry for your loss 🙁 Thank you for sharing it with me. I also hope that your sisters do not follow in the same footsteps, the % is very high unfortunately.
